I Have A Slow Computer! How Do I Know What’s Wrong With It, How Do I Perform A Diagnostic?
Remember when your PC was brand new, it ran like a dream, loaded up in lightning fast speed and seemed to know what you want to do even before you did? But now, because you’re reading this article, I assume your computers ‘get up and go’ has well and truly ‘got up and gone.’ Your waiting 30 seconds for your Start Menu to appear, never mind for your web browser to load. Your brand new PC is now a Slow Computer, a waste of your time and no longer a pleasure to use.
So what you do is go onto the internet and look for the easiest way to speed up your PC, generally you find a registry cleaner, you pay $40 for it and you’ve got yet another performance hampering program on your already slow computer which slows your start up speed, takes up more of your memory and despite its handful of bonuses and useful tools, your still at square one, with a slow computer.
You’ve put loads of programs on your machine, experimented with too many pieces of free or paid software you found on the internet (don’t deny it, I know you’re out there), you’ve browsed thousands of web pages, filled your hard drive to the brim with music, photos and videos, and all of a sudden, you’re waiting a lifetime for your slow computer to load. You switch it on, have your tea and it’s just about ready for you.
Most of the time, the causes of a slow computer are down to neglect. Now don’t feel guilty, because there’s so many people out there who WANT you to have a slow computer. They want you to suffer so much that you end up putting your hand in your pocket and shell out a fortune to speed up your PC.
That’s why nobody ever told you, when you bought your computer that you should perform a number of maintenance tasks to keep it in good nick.
I’m going to break the causes of a slow computer down in to two categories but I could probably go on for years addressing subcategories and sub-sub- categories:
Hardware Problems:
Usually as a result of drivers (the software which communicates and translates to your hardware) being outdated and struggling with compatibility, causing a slow computer; hardware problems can also cause a slow computer simply because you are overloading it, you’re t 1000 rying to make your 1GB of RAM do the job of a 4GB RAM, for example. Software Problems:
The classic software problem is where you’ve gone onto a website and they’ve sold you a free piece of software which might have promised to fix your slow computer but is riddled with adverts and sometimes spybots. You’ve given it full permission to your already slow computers’ resources and this free software is now using as much of these resources as it can to sell you its products, I’m going to stress to you now: REMOVE ALL FREE SOFTWARE YOU HAVE DOWNLOADED FROM THE INTERNET, THEY WILL SLOW YOUR COMPUTER, because it’s the simplest and most common cause of a slow computer! There are other problems Software can raise including DLL errors, Active X Errors, freezes, crashes, and the dreaded Blue Screen of Death.
To identify the problems with your slow computer you need to look at the circumstances in which your computer is not performing:
If it’s slow to start up, consider that your computer might be overloaded, manage your start programs and stop all but the necessary programs from loading at start up. If your computer fails only when you are running a certain program, you might consider re-installing that particular program. Or if your slow computer’s hard drive is over 75% full, you might want to relocate media files to external storage, alleviating the demand from your Operating System until its actually needed.
